Dorothy passed away at her home on Saturday, February 11. She was preceded in death by her husband William Nolan, Jr. She is survived by her four children, Frances Morin (Jim), Lawrence Nolan (Helen), Eileen Lane (Richard) and Paul Nolan; five grandchildren, Nicole Morin Renio (Ed), Aaron Morin (Juanita), Becky Lane Mintchev (Peter), Mathew Lane, and Samantha Lane Delight (Shane); and seven great-grandchildren, Pierce, Phoebe, Ridge, Callaway Renio; Madeline Delight, Sonja & Felix Mintchev.
Dorothy graduated from Quillanute High School in Fork, WA as valedictorian in 1939. She went to St. Joseph Nursing School in Tacoma, WA and graduated in 1943. Dorothy then enlisted in the US Navy Nurse Corps and served as an officer during WWII. While she was in the Navy she met and married William E. Nolan, Jr. on August 2, 1945 and was married for 40 years until his death in 1985.
Dorothy and Bill moved to Livermore in 1956 where they worked and raised their family. She returned to nursing in 1963 and retired in 1978. Her other activities included Aqua Cowboys, St. Michael Church, St. Michael Mother's Club, St. Vincent de Paul Society and Golden Friends.
She was also awarded the Livermore Recreation District's prized Samuel Bothwell award in 1961 for her service to the community and the district. Dorothy taught private swimming lessons for over 25 years in her backyard. She started teaching neighborhood children how to swim and this became so popular it developed into one of the first private swimming schools in the Tri-Valley area.
Visitation on Monday, Feb. 20 from 5PM to 9PM with a vigil/rosary at 6PM at St. Michael Church, 458 Maple St.; Mass on Tuesday, Feb. 21 at 11AM at St. Michael Church; burial to follow at St. Michael cemetery.
In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the WWII Memorial in Washington, D.C. or a charity of your choice.
