
Paul Kelly, 74 passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family on October 10, 2011 following a severe stroke.
Paul was born on May 24, 1937, in Sandpoint, Idaho. He moved to Fort Peck, Montana and then to Oak Ridge, Tennessee for a short time following his father's work. He then moved back to Sandpoint with his mother Delores and attended Lincoln School, Farmin Jr. High, and graduated from Sandpoint High School in 1955. He attended Gonzaga University for one year before transferring to CAL Berkeley where he was a Phi Delta Theda and received his degree in architecture in 1961.
Paul joined Hans Ostwald's firm as a student intern in 1960 and in 1965 formed a partnership with Hans as Ostwald & Kelly Architects, AIA. Upon Mr. Ostwald's passing in 1976, the firm was renamed E. Paul Kelly, AIA Architecture/Planning. Paul made his mark as an established church architect designing beloved buildings throughout the East Bay including St. Johns Presbyterian Church in Berkeley, Walnut Creek Presbyterian Church and Immaculate Heart of Mary in Brentwood.
Paul was a model husband and father, was a devoted Catholic and attended mass on a daily basis. Paul was an avid golfer and a lover of the arts, he traveled the world visiting churches and golf courses, attended the opera, theater and symphonies at home and abroad. Paul enjoyed spending time with his golf buddies on boys weekends and with his family and friends in North Idaho. He especially enjoyed watching the CAL Bears win. Go Bears!
Paul is survived by his seventh grade sweetheart and wife of 53 years Joanne Pennington, his sons, Mark, David (Alison), Eric, Chris (Carol) and his nine grandchildren, Nicolette, Cristofer, Yesica, Erica, Emily, Samantha, Amanda, Kyle and Grace.
A Rosary will be held on Thursday, October 13 at 7pm at St. Mary Magdalen Church, 2005 Berryman St., Berkeley, CA. Mass and a celebration of his life will be held Friday, October 14th at 1:00 at St. Mary Magdalen.
Another celebration will be held in Sandpoint, Idaho, where he will be laid to rest. In lieu of flowers, a donation in Paul's honor can be made to St. Mary Magdalen Building Fund – or your favorite charity.
